What is the negativity bias, and where does it come from?

This biological mechanism, which involves placing greater importance on negative events than on positive ones, is known in cognitive psychology as the negativity bias.

→ An isolated event is generalized into an implicit rule destined to repeat itself.

  • Discounting the positive: excessively downplaying the positive aspects of an experience or behavior.

Ex: “If I achieved my goal, it’s because it wasn’t ambitious enough.”

→ The positive outcome is immediately downplayed, even denied, and reframed negatively.

  • Catastrophizing: imagining the worst-case scenario based on a symptom or a sign.

Ex: “He’s taking longer to reply… he’s probably already getting bored… this won’t last.”

→ Based on an ambiguous signal, the mind begins to spiral toward a broader negative outcome.
